Q: Why did Windows expire or report that it is not genuine?
A: Departmental licenses for Microsoft Windows are network based.

A computer with a network-based Windows license needs to connect to the campus network at least once every six months so the computer can renew its license. If your computer is reporting that its Windows Activation has expired, do the following:

  1. Connect the computer to a campus network and ensure it has a valid campus IP address
  2. Click Start and type into the command box: cmd
  3. In the Command Window that opens, type: slmgr.vbs /ato
In a few moments you should see a window informing you that Windows has been activated.
