Q: How do I change the file format for screenshots?
A: This is just a Terminal command.

Just open a Terminal window and type:

   defaults write com.apple.screencapture type image_format

Replace image_format with your preferred image format.

I imagine that anything supported by QuickTime should work.

I tested tiff , jpg , pdf , and png. png is the default.

Here are some examples:

   defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

   defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf

   defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png

   defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tiff

You'll then have to logout/login to make the change take effect.

Or just sudo killall SystemUIServer to immediately implement the new screenshot format.
